PROJECT HUNTER

The Aged Warrior: A Stylised Character for Project Hunter

Project Hunter was the codename for an indie game development project that, unfortunately, didn’t make it to launch. As the sole 3D artist in the early stages, I had the opportunity to create a diverse range of characters.

In this example I’m showing casing the Old Knight concept.

Below you can see an early concept sketch provided to me for the ‘Old Knight’.

My role primarily involved transforming concept art into fully realized 3D models. For this, I utilised Blender for sculpting and modeling, while Substance Painter was my go-to for PBR texturing. The project embraced a highly stylized aesthetic—featuring bright, vibrant characters with soft, rounded forms that added a playful and charming appeal.

I was responsible for all aspects of the character and assets. From 3D modeling and sculpting, to rigging, texturing and posing.

This asset was textured using a PBR (Physically Based Rendering) workflow to ensure realistic material behaviour under dynamic lighting conditions. The PBR approach allows for consistent results across different engines and platforms, making the asset fully game-ready. You can see examples of the texture maps used—such as Base Colour, Roughness, Metallic, and Normal—in the previews below.

All character models were rigged in Blender using tools like Auto-Rig Pro, allowing for fast and flexible rigging while ensuring compatibility with industry-standard export formats. This setup streamlines the process of exporting to game engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity, supporting clean retargeting and animation workflows. Each model was also carefully optimised to balance visual fidelity with real-time performance, making them well-suited for use in gameplay scenarios or cinematics.

This character is just one of several I created for the project, each designed with performance, style, and animation in mind. You can explore a selection of posed shots and presentation renders in the gallery below, showcasing the character from multiple angles and in various expressive stances.
